Today, there is an all out assault on our oceans. The assault is coming from so many directions including climate change, pollution, habitat loss, overfishing, and destructive practices like undersea mining, offshore drilling and bottom trawling. The onslaught must be addressed. Here in the United States, we are seeing a shift away from the regulatory environment that looks to protect the ocean. That means that we need more voices advocating for ocean health and sustainability and supporting a legislative agenda designed to protect not harm the seas. Businesses and nonprofits, like the Scuba Educational Alliance of Connecticut have a voice. One of the ways that we can make our voice heard is by partnering with Oceana; specifically as a member of the National Business Coalition for the Oceans. Oceana’s National Business Coalition for the Oceans was launched in June 2021 as a way to unite business from across the country to win policy victories that protect our oceans and coastal communities. There are over 200 member businesses in the coalition focused on preventing the expansion of offshore oil drilling, stopping overfishing, reducing bycatch, protecting habitats, curbing plastic pollution, stopping illegal fishing and increasing transparency. We joined this coalition so that SEA-CT can also lend our voice in support of the goals of the coalition. As a member we also stay up-to-date on the latest news and information coming from Oceana and establish a connectedness with other like-minded businesses. Since being founded in 1999, Oceana has achieved more than 325 victories and protected over 4 million square miles of ocean. The ocean has resilience but it also has limits. We are proud to have joined the National Business Coalition for the Oceans as we continue on our mission of fostering a new generation of ocean stewards.
