Just a few days ago, on a sunny Sunday morning in Stonington, CT, our 2025 Ocean Steward I scholarship winner, Liam Moylan (center) finished up his PADI Open Water Diver certification with Scuba Shack based in Newington, CT. Becoming an open water scuba diver is one of the first steps toward a life-long commitment to the ocean.
Liam's training involved completing a robust online knowledge development course that provided the baseline knowledge of scuba diving including the physics of the underwater world and the physiology associated with diving. His training continued with classroom sessions at Scuba Shack where the class reviewed the material and was introduced to the equipment needed to venture underwater. Then it was time for confined water training at Middlesex YMCA where he completed five confined water dives in order to master the skills needed to proceed to open water certification. Then it was time to head to the ocean. Liam's open water certification dives took place at Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, RI and completed at DuBois Beach in Stonington. Liam is currently a senior at Maloney High School in Meriden. His plans right now are to attend Sacred Heart University next fall and study Criminal Justice with a minor in Marine Biology. His future goals are to become a Conservation Officer. A new generation of ocean stewards is needed now more than ever and we will continue on our mission by bringing more Liam's into the fold of scuba diving through our Ocean Steward I program.
