SEA-CT and the Newington Extravaganza

The Scuba Educational Alliance of Connecticut made a splash at the Newington Extravaganza on Saturday July 19, 2025. We teamed up with our friends from Scuba Shack now located in Newington to meet and greet folks from the area to talk about what it takes to become a scuba diver, various diving adventures and introduce SEA-CT to the local community. The weather was absolutely spectacular with warm temperatures, abundant sunshine and low humidity. There were over 100 booths at the extravaganza along with numerous food venues, live music, refreshments and rides.

We often take for granted that people know about opportunities to become scuba divers, but that is not really the case. People are not necessarily aware that you can take up diving here in Connecticut. You don’t need to be in a tropical location to learn how to dive. Scuba diving courses are run year-round here. And not only can you gain your diving certification, you have opportunities to continue to expand your diving horizons with sponsored dive trips and more advanced training.

SEA-CT believes that scuba divers are natural ambassadors for ocean health and sustainability and are true ocean stewards. We also understand that the expense of becoming a scuba diver may be a barrier for young men and women to enroll in training. At the Newington Extravaganza we had the chance to let folks know that there are programs like our scholarships that will help to foster and create a new generation of ocean stewards.

Becoming an Ocean Steward - Caleigh’s Journey

In early May 2023, Caileigh Fisher was finishing up her junior year at Maloney High School in Meriden, CT when she signed up for our discover scuba diving program. Caileigh’s enthusiasm for scuba diving was on full display with her first breaths underwater. She wanted to continue on and become a certified scuba diver. Her desire to ultimately pursue a career in marine biology along with her confidence in diving, led to Caileigh’s selection for one of our first scholarships for scuba certification.

Throughout the training, Caileigh demonstrated a tenacity and drive to overcome any challenges presented with the rigors of scuba diving. Her motto throughout the course was, “I can do it”. And she did. Caileigh became a certified open water scuba diver in July 2023 after finishing her four certification dives at the Brownstone Adventure Sports Park.

Caileigh’s passion for scuba diving remained throughout her senior year and participated in our Coral Conservation Course. She added another certification to her resume. As a busy senior, she did manage to continue to get some additional diving done by taking advantage of several Scuba Shack events including dives at Stonington Point and at Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, RI.

In the Fall 2024, Caileigh started her pursuit of a degree in marine biology by enrolling at Middlesex Community College. She also wanted to continue with her diving education and applied for our 2025 Ocean Steward II - Advanced Open Water program. Given her passion for diving and continued commitment, Calieigh was awarded with this scholarship.

With her scholarship in hand, she continued her journey by earning her Enriched Air Nitrox rating and ultimately completed her Advanced Open Water certification. Caileigh finished her five dives that included the required deep and navigation training.

Caileigh’s journey from her first discover scuba session, through open water training and then obtaining her advanced certification is also a journey in becoming an ocean steward by seeing first hand the wonders of the ocean and the incredible environment that needs our protection.

Congratulations, Caileigh!
